A Camera In My Eyeball Would Be Nice

I've got a big fish story, sans fish:

So, I was headed home yesterday evening (northbound on MoPac, around 6:45) crossing the bridge over Ladybird Lake, in the fast lane, and moving at a decent clip (well, "decent" for evening commuter traffic, anyway). In the lane just right of me, a little black coupe caught my eye. Hmm, looks familiar, and yet...

I approach in my lane as his begins to slow, and something didn't seem right about this car. I slowed in my lane to let my eyes linger as long as possible. I had my eyes on this car for probably a solid 15 seconds. I wasn't being rushed by traffic to move too fast, so I cruised by at a leisurely pace.

It was an Audi, black with a tan interior, probably 1998-2003 vintage (which is my favorite vintage for Audis). The badge on the back said "A3". It had two doors. And a trunk, not a hatch. I hadn't recalled seeing a car like this before, as I thought that A3's only came as hatchbacks. It was certainly not a TT wearing an A3 badge; it had a greenhouse more similar to an A4 sedan - plenty of headroom for rear passengers. It was overall a clean, well-cared for daily driver, that looked completely stock. The driver was probably in his mid 40's and had a dog in the back seat.

So, this morning I've been looking for any instance of a 2-door, coupe or sedan variation of an A3, and I haven't found anything. The closest I've seen was a silver A4 sedan with the rear doors welded shut and smoothed out. I'm now questioning whether or not I'm correctly remembering what I saw; but I recall being surprised because it was an unusual configuration. I wonder now if I'm losing my mind.

So, having a camera in my eye at the time would've been great. I had my phone, but I was honestly too busy staring at the car in question to operate my phone camera.

Has anyone here ever seen such a thing as a 2-door A3 Coupe? Maybe an import from one of the southern countries that don't share models with the US (Mexico or Brazil, perhaps?)

Also, if you'd like to share your own big fish story, please do! I promise to give your claims an open mind.

See, it's a hatchback, but I could've sworn that the one I saw was a coupe, which isn't really possible...

Also, it was the previous generation, i think.

Still a nice damn looking ride... thank you!
